Episode 83: The Rise of AI as a Service

April 1, 2020 by exponentialwisdom

Peter and Dan discuss the power of Artificial Intelligence as a Service (AIaaS) and its utility to thousands of companies in both traditional and non-traditional sectors. By adding an AI layer to your organization, AIaaS tools can help any company achieve scale with minimal increases in headcount, fueling data-driven business decisions, personalized marketing efforts, team efficiency, and countless other benefits.

In this episode:

  • Dan elaborates on a quote by Gino Wickman — “Systemize the predictable so you can humanize the exceptional” — and uses it as a framework for understanding AI-human collaboration.
  • Illustrating several examples (e.g. AIs that help doctors diagnose patients in real time), Peter discusses how he is using “AI as his ‘WHO’” to run experiments across his organizations.
  • Dan delves into the importance of teamwork between humans and technology, a partnership he claims will be key for competitive businesses in decades to come.

Episode 56: Passing the Turing Test

July 15, 2018 by exponentialwisdom

Peter and Dan discuss Google Duplex, an AI system capable of conducting natural conversations to carry out “real world” tasks over the phone. The technology is directed towards completing specific tasks, such as scheduling certain types of appointments and makes the conversational experience as natural as possible, allowing people to speak normally — like they would to another person — without having to adapt to a machine.

In this episode:

  • Peter talks about the Turing test, developed by Alan Turing in 1950, as a test of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human, and why he believes Google Duplex has conquered this feat. Read the Google blog here.
  • Dan and Peter discuss the implications of technology like this, when AI’s master realistic voice-synthesizing, and the societal and legal ramifications. Will AI’s be required to self-identify by law? Should they?
  • Peter describes a future where AI’s impact the education industry and believes we are less than 5 years away from this disruption.

Episode 52: When Everything Is Intelligent

April 8, 2018 by exponentialwisdom

Peter and Dan imagine a future when AI saturates everything in our lives and every object becomes intelligent with the ability to learn about you.

In this episode:

  • Peter shares stories from his recent trip to China, including his experience with $5 machine learning chips that transform any object less than $100 into an intelligent machine.
  • Dan describes tasks that currently annoy him and his belief that annoyance is where innovation happens first.
  • Peter and Dan discuss things they don’t want an AI to help with, and why certain things in life will stay analog to give humans pleasures.

Episode 51: Advertising to AI’s

March 18, 2018 by exponentialwisdom

Peter and Dan discuss the future of advertising products and services, including new possibilities when personal AI’s are in the world. Peter describes a near future in which artificial intelligence is so good at predicting desires that we will ultimately give them control of our purchasing power.

In this episode:

  • Dan shares his history in the advertising business in his early days out of college at a large agency in Canada, where they did print, radio, and television ads for big brands, and how this business has dramatically changed.
  • Peter paints a picture of the future when personal AI’s with perfect knowledge will have enough data to correctly predict which products and services we will want, even before we ask.
  • Dan and Peter agree that human-AI collaboration will ultimately level up humanity in a way that will dramatically change many industries, including advertising and marketing.

38Episode 38 CardPeter and Dan explore the history of innovation over centuries and the “adjacent possible,” a concept developed by Steven Johnson in his book “How We Got to Now.”

In this episode:

  • Dan outlines how many entrepreneurs get caught up in future possibilities that aren’t immediately actionable, and analyzes the impact of this negative thinking pattern.
  • Peter discusses why the pace of innovation is picking up and how exponential tools like artificial intelligence, nanotech and brain-computer interfaces are quickly becoming resources available to the masses.
  • Dan talks about using a tool he developed at Strategic Coach for getting people in touch with what is truly possible and in their control.
